Vintage Trailer of the Week 22

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. I know, a combination of names to make you shudder. But this, their first collaboration, is a great little romantic fantasy that could have been made in the 1940s. Hanks - back before he took himself so seriously - is perfect, and Ryan plays three characters, each of them convincing and distinctive. It flopped. Nobody saw it. There is no justice.

No, couldn't imagine it made in the 40s, seems far too 80s.
Have just watched Shop Around the Corner which was fucking hilarious.

Obviously it's got an intrinsically 80s look - the lighting, photography, set design, costumes etc.
But I meant it's premise, it's script and it's sensibility. There's a mixture of darkness and optimism which is very post-War American, I think.
More Capra than Lubitsch (to pick up on your Shop Around the Corner reference), though.
With 80s hairstyles.
